OGS Scholarships and Awards administered through Scholarship Manager

Beginning on October 19, 2009, the on-line scholarship application needed to apply for the following 2010-2011 OGS scholarships and awards listed below will be available at the Scholarship Manager* website. Please read: In order to apply for these scholarships, you need to be admitted to or have applied for admission to a graduate degree program at PSU beginning in Fall 2010. You do not need to have received information that you have been officially admitted to a graduate degree program to apply for scholarships, but you must be admitted to a graduate degree program and the univeristy in order to receive any of these awards.

Judith Lynne Taylor Scholarship

The Judith Lynne Taylor Scholarship is a gift of the Estate of Judith Lynne Taylor, a resident of the state of Washington, to be used to benefit women graduate students. As of September 23, 2009, we anticipate that there will be one award of $1,000 for the 2010-11 academic year.

Monroe M. Sweetland Endowed Community Leadership Scholarship

The Monroe M. Sweetland Endowed Community Leadership Scholarship will be awarded to an admitted graduate student in the School of Education, the School of Social Work, or the College of Urban and Public Affairs. Requires 6 or more credits graduate registration per term toward the program requirements and successful completion each term. Award is merit-based with financial need a consideration. As of September 23, 2009, we anticipate that there will be one or two awards of $1,500 each for the 2010-11 academic year.

A cash award in varying amounts will be awarded to a graduate degree student at Portland State University with physical disabilities in academic years when funding is available. Requires 6 or more credits graduate registration per term toward the degree requirements and successful completion each term. Award is merit-based with financial need a consideration. One or two cash awards of varying amounts in academic years when funding is available will be awarded to students admitted to graduate degree programs in the departments of Biology, Chemistry, English, Foreign Languages and Literatures, Geology, and Physics; requires a tuition remission from another source. Requires 9 credits minimum graduate registration per term toward the degree requirements and successful completion each term. Award is merit-based with financial need a consideration. Deborah Murdock Scholarship

The Deborah Murdock Scholarship will be awarded annually to assist Portland State University graduate students in achieving their educational goals. The fund will support tuition, fees, books, or other expenses for a graduate student with financial need who is dedicated to a career in public service. As of October 15, 2009, we anticipate that there will be one award of up to $2,500 for the 2010-11 academic year.

Frank L. Roberts Community Service Scholarship

The Frank L. Roberts Community Service Scholarship will be awarded to an admitted graduate degree student at Portland State University who demonstrates a past and future commitment to community or public service not only as a career but as a component of a healthy society. Requires 6 credits graduate registration per term toward the degree requirements and successful completion each term. Award is merit-based with financial need a consideration. As of October 15, 2009, the award is expected to be $2,000 for the 2010-2011 academic year.

Marie Brown Travel Award

Applications must be received in the Office of Graduate Studies (6th floor, Unitus Building, 4th & Lincoln) no later than 5:00 P.M. on the following schedule (late applications will go into the following term's applicant pool):

  • Friday, October 9, 2009, for Fall term
  • Friday, January 15, 2010, for Winter term
  • Friday, April 9, 2010, for Spring term

This award fund is the result of a generous bequest from the will of Marie Brown, who was a member of the Office of Graduate Studies and Research from its foundation in 1964 until her retirement in October 1987. It is the intention of the Office of Graduate Studies to recognize outstanding work of PSU graduate degree students and to contribute to their professional development in their own fields by helping to fund their travel to distant sites for scholarly purposes. Awards will be given in varying amounts up to the maximum award per student of $400.00. The total disbursement in any term is variable, depending on the amount available and the applications received.

WAGS Master's Thesis Award and Innovation in Technology Award

The Western Association of Graduate Schools (WAGS) provides awards recognizing distinguished scholarly achievement as demonstrated in a master's thesis and the innovative application of technology to thesis/dissertation scholarship at both the master's and doctoral level. Nominations must be submitted by the student's thesis or dissertation adviser.

Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program

The Presidential Management Fellowship Program (PMF) is open to graduate students from all academic disciplines who expect to complete an advanced degree (master's degree, law degree, or doctoral degree) from a qualifying college or university between September 1, 2009 and August 31, 2010. These fellowships are two-year awards for outstanding men and women who have a clear interest in, and commitment to, excellence in the leadership and management of public policies and programs, regardless of their academic discipline and career path.

The application will be open only from October 1 through October 15, 2009.

University Club Foundation, Inc. Fellowship Award Program

Nominations must be submitted to the student’s Dean’s Office early enough for the Dean to make internal decisions. Each Dean’s Office may select the School/College’s best candidates for this program and must submit those nominations to the PSU Office of Graduate Studies (6th floor, Unitus Building) no later than 12:00 Noon on Wednesday, April 15, 2009.

The University Club Foundation annually awards merit-based fellowships to qualifying graduate students from the participating Oregon universities. Candidates are considered from Portland State University, Oregon Health Sciences University, Oregon State University, University of Oregon, and University of Portland. This year's cash award is $5,000 per recipient.

In addition to the monetary reward, this year's recipients will each receive a three-year complimentary membership in the University Club, which includes complimentary admission to three major Club events and an opportunity for graduate students to build a professional network.

Office of Academic Affairs

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Graduate Scholarship Program

Deadline: February 28, 2008

This program provides awards up to $50,000 per year for up to six years. This scholarship is limited to students who have received their bachelor's degree from PSU and will begin a graduate program in Fall 2008. Students who are admitted to a graduate program beginning before Fall 2008 are not eligible. Students must be nominated by their department. Applied Linguistics

James R. Nattinger Scholarship Fund

Deadline: February 1

Graduate Teaching award with tuition remission and small stipend for an outstanding graduate student in the Department of Applied Linguistics. Requires 9 credits minimum graduate registration per term toward the degree requirements and successful completion each term. In case funding won't allow a full stipend a partial cash stipend will be granted. For more details go to the department website at www.ling.pdx.edu.

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Carl E. Green Fellowship

This fellowship has been established to recognize and financially assist a graduate student enrolled in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, pursuing the specialty area of environmental or geotechnical engineering at Portland State University.

Maseeh Graduate Fellowship

The Maseeh Graduate Fellowship is to be awarded annually to outstanding graduate students in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE). The participation of international students is encouraged. The fellowship award includes a 9-month stipend ($10,000) and full tuition remission for the recipient during the annual term of the fellowship.

Structural Engineers Association of Oregon

The Structural Engineers Association of Oregon awards multiple scholarships each academic year. The qualified candidate is an established local resident seeking a bachelor's degree or advanced degree in civil engineering that is focused on a career in structural engineering.

Economics

The Economics Department International Economic Graduate Assistantship

Provides for a research assistantship stipend for the first year the recipient is enrolled in the master's program, supplemented by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a tuition waiver for first year of study. The prize is awarded as part of the admissions process to the Economics Department master's program.

Abdul Qayum Fellowship

Provides for a student from Aligarh Muslim University or Shibli National College in India to apply for support to pursue any graduate degree offered with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, with preference to be given to students seeking a degree in Economics and with demonstrated financial need. The College is providing a matching tuition waiver.

Graduate Prizes in Economics

Beginning in the Spring 2006, he Economics Department Faculty will give two annual prizes to Economics Masters students. At first these prizes will consist of a certificate and a nominal money award. We hope to fundraise in future for the prizes, so that one day we may be able to recreate them as scholarships.

The Linda Hamilton Prize

Awarded to the top student in the general Economics master's program. This prize is named in honor of Linda Hamilton, an alumni of the program who has generously supported the Department through thin budget years.

The Haeri-Keast-Khawaja Prize

Awarded to the top student in the newly proposed Masters in Environmental and Resource Economics. The prize is named in honor of the three adjunct faculty members who contributed so much to the department's program in energy economics and policy.

English

The Academy of American Poets Award

Presented for the best poem or group of poems submitted by a student. Winning poems may be selected for publication by the Academy.

The Philip Ford Graduate Award

Honors the best piece of original scholarship or criticism written for graduate credit in an English course.

The Tom Doulis Graduate Fiction Writing Awards

Awarded for a work of fiction by a student enrolled in a fiction writing class at the graduate level.

The Shelley Reece Award in Poetry

Given to a graduate student of English who is interested in pursuing a career in the field of writing. The $1000 prize recipient will have completed a minimum of one year of coursework at PSU and will be selected for their achievements, interest and talent in the field of poetry writing, as well as demonstrated financial need. Applicants should submit a portfolio containing a representative sample of their work in the genre of poetry along with a personal statement indicating their goals as a writer and their financial need. The successful applicant will demonstrate both excellence in writing and need for support. Applicants should be able to demonstrate how receiving the award would be an important contribution to their ability to continue pursuing their writing goals.

The Tom Bates Award in Nonfiction Writing

Given to a student enrolled in the M.A. in Writing program whose work shows excellence in creative nonfiction or literary journalism. The $1000 prize is awarded on the combined basis of submitted work and overall performance in the writing program.

The Phyllis and Tom Burnam Creative Writing Endowed Scholarship

This fund provides annual student support, in the form of awards, scholarships or fellowships, to English department undergraduate and/or graduate students. Awards shall be made in recognition of the best fiction, nonfiction, and poetry writing done by a student or students who have enrolled in any writing class taught by a member of the English department during the course of the year.

Graduate School of Education

Helen Farrens Library/Media Scholarships

For students in Portland State University's Graduate School of Education Library/Media Programs who are: current Portland Public School teachers obtaining a library/media endorsement, current Portland Public School library/media aids completing their teaching license with a library/media endorsement or adding the endorsement to their license, or students who intend to work in Portland Public Schools upon graduation. Judaic Studies

The Sara Glasgow Cogan Scholarship

Deadline: March 28, 2007

Up to two Sara Glasgow Cogan Scholarships will be awarded each year to full-time PSU undergraduate and graduate students who undertake, in partnership with a Jewish cultural or communal organization, research or service-learning projects with a significant academic component. Students of all ethnic and religious backgrounds are invited to apply.

Mathematics and Statistics

Maseeh Graduate Fellowship for Outstanding Mathematician

Deadline: March 1

The Maseeh Graduate Fellowship in Mathematics is awarded to an outstanding graduate student in the PhD program in Mathematical Sciences. This annual award is made in recognition of the importance and need for highly skilled and innovative mathematicians in the Mathematical Sciences. Applicants must be full-time PSU graduate students seeking a PhD in the Mathematical Sciences. Selection is based upon merit. The Daniel & Laura Brose Memorial Scholarship

The Daniel & Laura Brose Memorial Scholarship was created in December 2001 by Albert and Margaret Chen, Telamon Corporation, in recognition of the support given to them by the Daniel and Laura Brose family. The scholarship will benefit graduate students who are enrolled in, or admitted to, a graduate program with the Portland State University Department of Mathematics & Statistics. Award recipients will be selected for their academic achievements and potential with preference to students of Asian descent. Awards are designated toward the underwriting of tuition and fees, books, instructional materials, and other related costs as estimated by the Office of Financial Aid at Portland State. Usually, there is one $1000 scholarship available. The scholarship may be renewed for a maximum of one year if the student maintains a good academic record and is otherwise successfully progressing toward his/her degree. Renewal will require a formal application and will go through the same review as all other applications for the scholarship. The Portland State University Master of International Management program scholarships recognizes MIM students who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, service, and leadership qualities.

Scholarships are awarded each year to several commendable students. The value and number of scholarships will be determined by the Admissions Committee, and may vary depending on funds available and the specific qualities and needs of the students selected.

If the applicant meets the Minimum Academic Requirements (see above link for requirements and instructions), he/she may apply for a MIM program scholarship. The deadline for scholarship applicants is March 31. Applicants may be accepted into the program prior to the determination of scholarships.

Toulan School of Urban Studies and Planning

The "Portland Edge" MURP Scholarship

The Toulan School of Urban Studies and Planning will award a $2000 Portland Edge Scholarship to an incoming student in the Masters of Urban and Regional Planning degree program who is a member of an under-represented group. Interested candidates should include a separate letter applying for the Portland Edge Scholarship along with their other application materials.

The award will be made in spring along with other offers of financial assistance for the academic year. The scholarship is funded with the royalties from The Portland Edge (Island Press, 2004), an anaysis of Portland area planning authored by faculty and graduates of the Toulan School of Urban Studies and Planning.

The Ernie Bonner Equity Planning Scholarship

This endowed scholarship was created by the Bonner family to honor the role that Ernie Bonner, former Planning Director for the City of Portland, played in creating equity planning in the United States. The scholarship will be awarded to a Master of Urban and Regional Planning, Master of Urban Studies, or Doctor of Urban Studies candidate committed to pursuing a career in or dedicating their scholarly effort towards equity planning. The award will first be made in the spring of 2006 and every year thereafter. Application materials are available from the School.

The Sumner Sharpe and Margaret Strachan Returning Student Scholarship

This endowed scholarship was created by Sumner Sharpe and Margaret Strachan to help support the participation of returning students, 30 years of age or older, seeking to make a career in planning. It will be awarded annually to a Master of Urban and Regional Planning candidate. Application materials are available from the School.

The MURP Alumni Board Student Leadership Award

The Master of Urban and REgional Planning Alumni Board annually makes a cash award to the graduating MURP student who has shown the potential to emerge as a leader in the field. The Board provides the award as a means for recognizing leadership and scholarship, and to help welcome newly graduated Masters candidates to the field. Northwest Health Foundation: Mark O. Hatfield Research Fellowship Program

The Northwest Health Foundation is pleased to announce a new funding opportunity open to health professionals interested in autism research: The Mark O. Hatfield Research Fellowship Program. The program honors the legacy of our founding Board Chairman, who for many years has been interested in autism and supporting research to improve the lives of families living with the disorder.

The purpose of the fellowship is to advance the research career of health practitioners who serve communities in Oregon and southwest Washington. A secondary purpose is to increase the intellectual resources of research-based institutions. Lastly, the Foundation hopes to encourage fellows to be leaders and spokespersons in their field of research.

Sauve Scholars

This program provides an opportunity for up to fourteen young leaders from all over the world to spend eight months in Montreal attending courses at McGill University, to enlarge upon their understanding of the state of the world and their roles in making positive change. The Scholarship is valued at $30,000 CDN. Since its inception, 45 young scholars from 37 different countries have been awarded Sauvé Scholarships.

Phi Kappa Phi Awards

Every year, the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi awards sixty Graduate Fellowships of $5,000 each and forty Awards of Excellence of $2,000 each to active members entering the first year of graduate or professional study. Applications are due to the local chapter February 1. Contact information is available on the website of PSU's chapter of PKP (www.phikappaphi.groups.pdx.edu).
